Civic resielience : botanical gardens in North America, birth, development, and enviromental awarness
2023
The chapter explores from a historical perspective the birth of botanical gardens in North America, considered a significant part of the ecological network system and of the green and blue 'infrastructure'. This important system opposes geographical risk, which must be organically dealt with in programmes, plans and strategies that protect the landscape, prevent risks, and strengthen short-, medium- and long-term actions, also involving local Communities, integrating the vision to the different scales of intervention and projects. The Botanical Garden, seen here as an 'Open Work', has an important role not only because it preserves botanical specimens that come from all over the world, but …
Interpleurale Katheteranalgesie
1994
Interpleural analgesia is a method of postoperative analgesia that was developed by Kvalheim and Reiestad in 1984. The main indication is postoperative pain after unilateral thoracic and upper abdominal surgery. Many authors report good analgesic effects and better postoperative lung function following cholecystectomy. There is some controversy on the effectiveness of this method after thoracic surgery. Further indications are post-traumatic pain after multiple rib fractures and chronic pain in the upper abdomen (carcinoma of the pancreas, chronic pancreatitis). The local anaesthetic of choice is bupivacaine (in concentrations of 0.25-0.75%, injection volumes of 10-40 ml, with or without ep…
Effects of Different Glucose Concentrations on Spinal Anaesthesia with Bupivacaine and Tetracaine
1989
The effects of 5% and 8% glucose in 0.5% tetracaine or bupivacaine on the anaesthetic spread were investigated in 80 urological patients requiring spinal anaesthesia for trans-urethral resection of the prostate. The local anaesthetic solutions were randomly administered, the patients being divided into four groups of 20, and the anaesthetic profile was then evaluated in a double-blind fashion by an independent observer. Maximum cephalad spread of analgesia was significantly greater with tetracaine in 8% glucose compared to the other three groups (tetracaine/5% glucose, bupivacaine/5 or 8% glucose) (P less than 0.05). Glucose concentration significantly influenced spreading characteristics o…
Volatility spillovers in the European bank CDS market
2015
From the 2007 subprime crisis to the recent Eurozone debt crisis, the banking industry has experienced terrible financial instabilitywith increasing volatility levels of bank default probability. UsingEuropean CDS spreads data from January 2006 to March 2013, thispaper sheds light on the impact of three recent significant events ofcredit risk volatility transmission between, firstly, Eurozone andnon-Eurozone banks, and then between distressed peripheral andcore countries inside the Eurozone. We employ an asymmetricmultivariate BEKK model to measure cross-market volatility spil-lovers. We find that both recent crises are distinct episodes. Theglobal financial crisis that originated outside Eu…
Measurement of brain tissue pressure in cold induced cerebral oedema.
1973
Experiments were performed in order to evaluate the concept that brain oedema is associated with an increase in local interstitial fluid pressure. Assuming that the pressure measured by the cotton wick technique represents the hydrostatic interstitial fluid pressure, the tissue pressure was recorded with pressure transducers in the white matter adjacent and remote to a local cold injury, in the opposite hemisphere, and in the cisterna magna. In 9 cats during steady-state conditions mean tissue pressures between 1.20±0.30 mm Hg and 2.33±0.80 mm Hg were found, as compared to a mean CSF pressure of 5.17±0.82 mm Hg. The tissue pressure was found to increase significantly adjacent to the lesion …
Genome-Wide Analyses Identifies Known and New Markers Responsible of Chicken Plumage Color
2020
Simple Summary In order to assess sources of variation related to Polverara breed plumage color (black vs. white), we carried out genome-wide analyses to identify the genomic regions involved in this trait. The present work has revealed new candidate genes involved in the phenotypic variability in local chicken populations. These results also contribute insights into the genetic basis for plumage color in poultry, and confirm the great complexity of the mechanisms that control this trait. Abstract Through the development of the high-throughput genotyping arrays, molecular markers and genes related to phenotypic traits have been identified in livestock species. In poultry, plumage color is a…
Computer simulation studies of finite-size broadening of solid–liquid interfaces: from hard spheres to nickel
2009
Using Molecular Dynamics (MD) and Monte Carlo (MC) simulations interfacial properties of crystal-fluid interfaces are investigated for the hard sphere system and the one-component metallic system Ni (the latter modeled by a potential of the embedded atom type). Different local order parameters are considered to obtain order parameter profiles for systems where the crystal phase is in coexistence with the fluid phase, separated by interfaces with (100) orientation of the crystal. From these profiles, the mean-squared interfacial width w^2 is extracted as a function of system size. We rationalize the prediction of capillary wave theory that w^2 diverges logarithmically with the lateral size o…
Safety and efficacy of left atrial appendage occlusion with the ACP or Watchman device guided by intracardiac echocardiography from the left atrium
2021
Abstract Background There is a paucity of randomized data regarding the safety and efficacy of the use of intracardiac echocardiography (ICE) from the left atrium (LA) to guide left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) procedures under local anesthesia using either of the available devices. Hypothesis The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy and safety of ICE from the LA with transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) for guidance during transcatheter LAAO procedures. Methods Single‐center, cohort study of patients undergoing LAAO with the Amplatzer Cardiac Plug or Watchman device. Procedures were guided by ICE from the LA with local anesthesia (n = 175) or TEE under general anesthesia (n…
Existence results and asymptotic behavior for nonlocal abstract Cauchy problems
2008
AbstractThe purpose of this paper is to study the existence and asymptotic behavior of solutions for Cauchy problems with nonlocal initial datum generated by accretive operators in Banach spaces.
Searching for repetitions in biological networks: methods, resources and tools
2013
We present here a compact overview of the data, models and methods proposed for the analysis of biological networks based on the search for significant repetitions. In particular, we concentrate on three problems widely studied in the literature: ‘network alignment’, ‘network querying’ and ‘network motif extraction’. We provide (i) details of the experimental techniques used to obtain the main types of interaction data, (ii) descriptions of the models and approaches introduced to solve such problems and (iii) pointers to both the available databases and software tools. The intent is to lay out a useful roadmap for identifying suitable strategies to analyse cellular data, possibly based on t…
